CDC Article Recommends Temperature and Employee Screening:

CDC Article

  • Pre-Screen: Employers should measure the employee’s temperature, and assess symptoms prior to them starting work. Ideally, temperature checks should happen before the individual enters the facility.
  • Regular Monitoring: As long as the employee doesn’t have a temperature or symptoms, they should self-monitor under the supervision of their employer’s occupational health program.
  • Wear a Mask: The employee should wear a face mask at all times while in the workplace for 14 days after last exposure. Employers can issue face masks or can approve employees’ supplied cloth face coverings in the event of shortages.
  • Social Distance: The employee should maintain 6 feet and practice social distancing as work duties permit in the workplace.
  • Disinfect and Clean work spaces: Clean and disinfect all areas such as offices, bathrooms, common areas, shared electronic equipment routinely.

What is an XVR?


What is an XVR?

Well you have heard of DVRs and NVRs, but what is an XVR? Well, we would say that an XVR Recorder is basically a DVR on steroids (but in a good way). A DVR (Digital Video Recorder) is a device used for recording and processing HD Analog or SD Analog Security Cameras. Meanwhile, an NVR (Network Video Recorder) is the device used for IP Cameras. Enter the XVR, a device that is able to record and display both HD and IP Cameras for maximum scalability. While an NVR will still be the best choice for most applications using all IP Cameras, XVRs have taken HD recording into a new dimension. In addition, XVR Recorders like the Uniview NVR302-16Q, can support all common HD Video Formats including TVI, AHD, CVI and CVBS. Therefore the recorder is compatible with the vast majority of cameras regardless of manufacturer or format.

What is the difference between an XVR and a DVR?

DVR Recorders are designed to process and record Analog Video Signals. They are used with Standard Definition or High Definition Security Cameras predominantly over Coax Cable or RG59. Some DVRs only support one format such as AHD or TVI. However, there are a number of ‘Hybrid’ DVR’s that can do multiple formats and accept a variety of Cameras using different signal formats at once. An XVR, on the other hand, takes that one step further. These Recorders will generally do all common HD over COAX formats, as well as supporing IP Cameras. This adds an interesting dimension to standard recorders and delivers an unmatched flexibility.

Is an XVR More Expensive?

Nope! The price is generally comparable to DVR pricing. Many major manufacturers have gone to producing either Hybrid DVRs or XVRs instead of standard DVRs and pricing has reflected this.

Why should I get an XVR?

Upgrading New Clients

If you are a Security Camera Installer and have a customer with legacy Analog or HD Analog Cameras, an XVR will provide more solution options without a customer having to replace existing equipment. Lets say that your customer has a 8 Channel DVR with (6) HD 1080P 2MP Cameras. For our example, lets assume that your customer wants higher resolution cameras or even wants to add IP Cameras. The need for higher resolution is obviously a common one. However, a potential client may also have a unique or specific need that only an IP Camera will provide. Of course, you could tell them to scrap their existing system, or try to install an NVR with expensive encoders, but that might be cost prohibitive. As an alternative, you could propose an XVR. This would allow using the customers (6) existing cameras as well as adding cameras of any format you choose. In addition you will be able to add several IP Cameras that solve your customers issue.

Bidding or Planning a Security Camera Application

Being more competitive when bidding a job, or being able to offer an alternative solution, is a good way to earn a clients trust. To take this one step further, installing an XVR will prevent you from being limited on camera options in the future. Whether you are installing the unit for a client, or you are an end user, you can rest assured that your system will be scalable for future expansion and variety of camera use.

What is True WDR or WDR in Security Cameras?

What is WDR?

I’m sure if you’ve been shopping for camera systems you’ve noticed, among other acronyms, WDR. WDR has become more readily available in Security Cameras in the last couple of years. But you may ask, “What is True WDR (or WDR) and why do I need it? To explain WDR and what it does is not as complex as you would think. WDR stands for Wide Dynamic Range. To put it in a nutshell, It’s the ability to produce high quality images across a broad range of light levels. In other words, the light coming in from a window may be much more intense than the light by your coffee machine. With True WDR, the camera takes pictures of both areas and stitches them together, giving you a better-quality image.


The image on the left is a standard Camera without True WDR. Notice that the image on the right gives full detail over the entire range of the image. The image on the right is using True WDR to delivery a properly exposed image despite the wide range of light levels.

WDR in Security Cameras

Some of you may be interested in a short history of how this all came about. Cameras historically struggled with wide ranges of lighting because of their dependency on a single exposure. Cameras needed light to generate an image. With too much light, the image was washed out, too little light and the image was too dark. If you had an environment with even lighting, the camera could adjust its iris opening size or its shutter speed to get the right amount of light.

Manufacturers, understanding this, would demo their cameras in environments that had even lighting. With no variation in the lighting, the demo showed a superior image. Consumers bought the cameras but found that their new cameras didn’t work effectively in the real world. Our offices and our homes have a wide range of lighting. The cameras had a tough challenge. If the camera restricted the amount of light it took in (to optimize for the bright areas) the lower light areas would be too dark. If it chose the opposite approach, optimizing for low light areas, the bright side would be washed out.

The main challenge for WDR is to set the exposure to capture both the dark and bright areas of an environment. A common solution is to use multiple exposure and combine them. This will produce a better-quality image. This is referred to as True WDR or Multi-Exposure WDR. A short exposure captures the bright areas, while a light exposure captures the dark areas.

True WDR cameras make a big difference in environments that have varying light levels. It is important to be able to capture the image of someone’s face as they walk into a dimly lit office from the bright sunlight outdoors. A subject’s hairstyle, clothing and details around him are crucial when studying the video surveillance footage.

There are two types of WDR cameras available:

  1. True WDR cameras that work with a shutter speed technique and two images.
  2. Digital WDR (DWDR) cameras which work with a software compensation technique.

Which is better? Almost in every case, True WDR will outperform Digital WDR.

True WDR cameras work by capturing two images with different exposures to light and merging them into a third one, and therefore works more intensely but also more efficiently, whereas the digital WDR works only with one image to make a digital exposure compensation.

With higher levels of light versus lower levels, you want a high performing WDR. Unfortunately, light measurements are not standardized and it’s the discretion of each manufacturer to determine what measurement to use. The generally accepted unit to measure in surveillance is the decibel (e.g., 58dB, 113dB, etc…). The higher the number, the better. The generally accepted dB level for a camera to be considered True WDR is 120dB. True WDR is a much more robust technology than Digital WDR. Digital WDR will not achieve the results delivered by True WDR and may not be sufficient for your application.

Therefore, it’s important to have knowledgeable salespeople to guide you to a manufacturer and camera that works best for your environment. Set Up QoS On your Uniview NVR


How to set up QoS on your Uniview NVR

QoS (Quality of Service) is the ability to provide better service for specified network communication. As a network security mechanism, Quality of Service is used to address problems like network delay and blocking. When the network is overloaded or congested, it ensures that critical services are not delayed or discarded and that the network runs efficiently. Below we will demonstrate How to set up QoS on your Uniview NVR. 

Note: To use QoS, make sure that the switch support QoS mode.

1. Click Setup > Network > QoS.


2. Set a priority level (0~63) for each service. At present, QoS allows you to assign different priority to audio and video, alarm report, configuration management and FTP transmission. The greater the value, the higher the priority. For example, if the value of audio and video is set to 60, alarm report and configuration management is set to 0, and FTP is set to 4, when network congestion occurs, the priority is to ensure the smooth running of audio and video.

3. Click Save.

Manually Setting or Synchronizing the System Time

1. Click Setup > Common > Time, and then click the Time tab.

2. Select a synchronization mode.

3. Set the correct time zone and system time. You may also click Sync with Computer Time to synchronize the time settings of your camera with that of your PC.

4. Click Save.


Synchronizing with the NTP Server

1. Click Setup > Common > Time, and then click the Time tab.

2. Set Sync Mode to Sync with NTP Server, and then set the IP address and port of the NTP server and update interval.

3. Click Save. The camera will periodically synchronize time with the NTP server.


Setting the DST

1. Click Setup > Common > Time, and then click the DST tab.

2. Select On for DST, set the start time, end time, and DST bias.

3. Click Save.

SD Cards for Uniview: Uniview produces a number of IP Cameras with a built in MicroSD Card Slot for on board recording. You may have also heard of the term ‘Edge’ Recording, which allows an IP Camera to record to a MicroSD Card for redundancy. Using this feature can add an extra layer of security for your stored images if you ever lose network connection. Because you can record on the camera itself, it is also possible to use (1) IP Camera as a stand alone system, without the need for an NVR.

How to Upgrade Uniview Devices

How to Upgrade Uniview NVR and IP Cameras

We are frequently asked “How do I upgrade my Uniview NVR” (or IP Camera). With Uniview Devices, the process is relatively simple and straight forward. If you are ready to upgrade one of your IP Cameras or a Uniview NVR, you can follow the steps below, or just give us a call! We love to talk to people about Uniview!


Notes on How to Upgrade Uniview Devices:

  • Make sure you use the correct upgrade file for you device. The upgrade file is a ZIP file and must include all the necessary files. Otherwise, unexpected results may occur.
  • Make sure power is not interrupted during upgrade. A power failure during system upgrade may cause startup failure. Use an Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS) if necessary. The device will restart after the upgrade is completed.
  • When upgrade the IPC, the upgrade boot program function is disabled by default, and only the camera will be upgraded to the latest version. If enabled, both the camera and the boot program will be upgraded.

How to Upgrade Uniview IP Cameras

1. Click: Setup > System > Maintenance.

2. Under Software Upgrade, click Browse and select the correct upgrade file.

3. Click Upgrade and then confirm to start. The camera will restart automatically after the upgrade is completed. Some devices support boot program upgrade. To upgrade, select Upgrade Boot Program.

4. You may click Detect to check for new versions available to cloud upgrade.


How to Upgrade your Uniview NVR

Upgrade the NVR under Maintain > Upgrade locally (using an upgrade file saved in a USB storage device) or by cloud (through a cloud server).

To upgrade by cloud, ensure that the NVR is connected to a fully functional DNS server (configured under System > Network > Basic), and click Check to see whether a newer version is available. The time that a cloud upgrade takes is affected by network connection status.

How Do You Backup Recordings & Images with a Uniview NVR?

Recording Backup

Backup, also known as recording backup, is the process of querying video stored on a hard disk of the NVR and then saving to a USB storage device or a DVD-R disc as a file. In this article, we will cover How to Backup Recordings with Uniview NVR.


Recording backup has the following conditions:

  • Back up using a USB storage device: format the partition in FAT32 or NTFS format; connect the storage device correctly to the NVR.
  • Back up using a disc: use a GP65NB60 DVD burner. Make sure the DVD-R disc is empty, and the burner is correctly connected to the NVR. Permission is required.

The recording to back up is stored on a hard disk of the NVR.

Note: The default file format is .mp4 when you back up recordings to a USB storage device.

Note: When backing up using a disc, recordings are saved as .TS files only.


Normal Backup

1. Click Backup > Recording. All cameras are selected by default.

2. Set search conditions and then click Search. Search results are displayed.

Note: You can lock/unlock and play recording files in this window.

3. Select the desired recording(s) and then click Backup.

4. Select a partition.


Back up to USB storage device

Set the destination in the USB storage device and then click Backup. The recording(s) will be saved to the specified directory.

Note: You may want to create a new folder for the recording(s) by clicking New Folder.

Note: If the connected storage device has a capacity that is greater than 2T, clicking Format will format the device to NTFS file system; if the capacity is 2T or less, the device will be formatted to

FAT32 or NTFS. Only certain devices can format a storage device that has a greater capacity than 2T.

Note: A progress bar (e.g., Exporting X/Y) is displayed to indicate the progress, where X indicates the current number being backed up, and Y indicates the total number of recordings. To cancel

the operation, click Cancel.

Note: A backup file is named in this format: camera name-recording start time file extension. For example, Ch9-20150630183546.mp4.



Back up to a DVD-R disc

Set the destination and then click Backup. The recording(s) will be saved to the specified directory.

Note: Before you start burning, check that the video to back up was not compressed using U-Code.

Note: Clicking Cancel before burning is finished will cause the disc unusable.

Note: When burning is finished, wait for the drive to eject itself. Do not eject the drive manually.

Note: The NVR does not support playback of recordings saved on a disc.



Video Clip Backup

A recording can be clipped and saved to a USB storage device.

1. Open the playback window.

  1. After playback starts, click on the playback toolbar to clip videos.
  2. Click   and then click 

4. Select the desired video clip(s) and then click Backup.

5. Select a destination in the USB storage device and then click Backup. The selected video clips are saved to the specified directory.



Image Backup

The default format of image backup is JPG.

1. Click Backup > Image.

2. Set search conditions and then click Search. Search results are displayed.

Note: The image resolution depends on the resolution from the output interface and the number

of windows displayed when the snapshot is taken.

3. Select the desired file(s) and then click Backup.

4. Select a destination in the USB storage device and then click Backup. The selected files are

saved to the specified directory.
